Glen's Big Olympic Moments

Glen Broad
Alberta Train Program Coordinator

Glen

Favorite winter Olympic sport? Why?

- Curling – I have been curling since I was 12 ( longer than most people have lived and continue to play twice a week so have a keen interest in the game and how it is growing on the international level thanks to the exposure of the Olympics and subsequent promotion.  The one thing I find interesting is that curling has been around for many many years and was not a recognized winter Olympic sport until the 90’s while relatively new sports like those at Cypress have quickly become official Olympic medal sports – speaks to the impact of “exposure” and sponsorship on the international stage.

Did you attend any of the events? Which ones? Most memorable one?

- Fortunate to attend 2 medal ceremonies, women’s semi final hockey and women’s gold medal curling – most memorable being the curling game because of personal interest and participation in the sport and feeling their pain of missing the critical shots in the 10th and extra end – we have all been there but must be a tough pill to swallow despite having a silver medal

Where were you and what were you doing when Sidney Crosby scored the gold medal goal on Sunday?

- Sitting ( sort of) on my couch, drinking beer and wringing my hands!!!  The atmosphere in the “hood” was electric  with tons of people on their balconies cheering

What’s the best thing that the Olympics has left left behind for both Vancouver and Vancouverites?

- Confirmation that Vancouver/ Lower Mainland is able to ‘Pull together” and show the world that we are able to deliver an event of this proportion proving that we are indeed a welcoming city with lots to offer and can show everyone a good time despite the “nofun Vancouver” reputation.   Hoping that the  lessons learned  from the successes will be a foundation for changes that will maintain that Olympic reputation as we go forward.

What will these games be remembered best for?

- I think that the games seemed to have brought all Canadians together on a level that we have not seen before – not just here in Vancouver but nation-wide.  The display of patriotism ( in our own Canadian way ) has also raised a greater respect for  the athletes, the Canadian Olympic movement,  the city of Vancouver, Whistler, the Lower Mainland and all of Canada.
